A third of Americans now ask an AI chatbot for medical advice before they call a doctor. That number comes from a recent TribLive survey, and it does not surprise me. Chatbots are free, available at midnight, and they never make you feel stupid for asking. I get it. But 58% of people who used AI for physical health questions eventually followed up with a doctor anyway. Which means the chatbot mostly bought them time, not answers.
The fitness and wellness industry has spent years making health feel complicated enough that you need to buy something. Now tech companies are doing the same thing, just faster. ChatGPT fielded 230 million health queries every week as of January 2026. That is a lot of people getting information from a tool that has no access to their medical history, no legal obligation to protect their data, and no ability to feel the lump they are worried about.
The part social media gets right
Doctors on social media can be genuinely useful. A clear explanation of what a blood pressure reading means, or why you should not stop antibiotics early, or what a normal A1C looks like: that kind of content helps people ask better questions at their next appointment. Specific, accurate, free. I am not against it.
And yes, the traditional medical system has real problems. Appointments are short. Doctors are overbooked. Getting a specialist referral can take months. If you are dealing with something that feels urgent and your doctor cannot see you for 3 weeks, I understand why you open TikTok or type into ChatGPT. That frustration is legitimate.
But here is where I hold my ground: the answer to a broken system is not to replace it with something that has no accountability at all.
What the internet cannot do for you
The drop-off in mental health follow-ups is the number that stays with me. Only 42% of people who used AI for mental health questions went on to see a professional. That means more than half stopped at the chatbot. For a headache, that might be fine. For depression or anxiety or something worse, it is not.
Social media health advice has a structural problem: it rewards what gets shared, not what is accurate. A video that says your fatigue is caused by a rare hormone imbalance gets more clicks than one that says you probably need more sleep and fewer late nights. The boring answer does not go viral. The scary one does.
ChatGPT is not HIPAA-protected. What you type into it is not private the way a conversation with your doctor is. If you are describing symptoms, medications, or mental health struggles, you are handing that information to a for-profit company with no obligation to keep it between you.
My actual advice is simple. Use the internet to prepare, not to diagnose. If something is bothering you, spend 10 minutes reading about it so you can describe it clearly. Write down your symptoms, when they started, and what makes them better or worse. Then bring that to your doctor. You will get more out of a 15-minute appointment if you walk in with a list than if you walk in having already decided what is wrong based on a Reddit thread.
If cost or access is the real barrier, look into community health centers, which charge on a sliding scale based on income. That is a real solution to a real problem. Trusting a chatbot with your health because your copay is too high is not a solution. It is a gap that the wellness industry is very happy to fill, at your expense.
Your doctor cannot see you in 30 seconds. But 30 seconds is not enough time to figure out what is actually wrong.
